My wife and I love hiking the trails here with our two dogs.
A true trail to run on, no longer are you stuck on a greenway or sidewalk. High quality hills that'll make you into a man/woman, many lakes/ponds that offer beautiful views, and single (rooty & technical) track trails or horse trails (smooth, very wide, easy to maneuver). Water fountains every now and then off horse trails.
Parking lot was full; not much parking. All trails are well-marked and well maintained. Enjoyed my experience.
This is the best parking lot for people who want to explore Umstead State Park that live in the southern part of Raleigh or in Cary and Apex. It's right off of the Harrison Avenue exit on I-40. There are three trails you can follow from this parking lot, the Loblolly Trail, Company Mill Trail, and the Reedy Creek Lake Trail. The only one that allows for mountain bikes is the Reedy Creek Lake Trail, the other two are for hiking only.
Awesome park in the heart of the Triangle that offers miles and miles of natural and bridle trails for hiking, trail running, biking and horseback riding.
Trails like Company Mill and Sycamore Loop Trail offer very technical terrain with considerable elevation change (for this area), making them great options for trail run training. Loblolly Trail is slightly less technical but also a great trail for hiking or running.
Umstead is the perfect park for getting away from urban life and returning to nature. Plus it's easy to get to from Highway 40 (Exit at N Harrison Ave and head North -- park entrance is less than half a mile from the exit).
